A Post From Abu Jalloh - Family Farm

IS CRCSL FAMILY FARM PROGRAM REALY CHANGING THE LIFE AND STATUS OF FARMERS IN KOINADUGU DISTRICT?

Figure Mr Karifa's house this year
after replacing their thatch roof with a zinc roof.
Karifa Mansaray 2 and his wife Finahba marah registered as new family farm program participants last year at Kalkoya. They have been very serious  and committed to the program even though their family is one of the smallest nuclear family in their community which comprises husband wife and four (4) children. This is unusual in their community.

During our survey last year, this small family challenged us that if we make seed and food for work loans to them, especially the hybrid rice varieties, they will be able to repay their loans back and from their profit they will change their thatch roof (house roof) to a zinc roof. We wrote it down and took some pictures of their home.
Eventually, after harvest this year, in March Mr Karifa bought six (6) bundles of zinc with which he successfully changed his thatch roof to a zinc roof after repaying back all his loan to the program.

Below is a photo of Mr Karifa’s house with a thatch roof in 2011 and next to it is another photo of the same house after replacing the thatch roof with a zinc roof this year.

Interestingly, Travis and I spent a night in this house in 2010.
